4 Tips for Healthier Skin
|
All of us want healthy skin. Taking care of your skin keeps it looking younger,
improves self-esteem, and reduces your risk of cancer. Don’t know where to begin?
Here are some suggestions:
1. Find Protection From the Sun
Studies have shown that exposure to the sun can increase wrinkles, age spots and
the likeliness of skin cancer. While staying out of the sun is virtually impossible,
protecting yourself from the sun’s rays is fairly easy to do. First, try to stay out of
the sun in the late morning or early afternoon. That’s when the sun’s rays are the
most powerful. If you have to be in the sun, wear protective clothing that’ll
properly cover your skin. Hats that provide shade for your face and neck are also
effective. Sunblock is also an easy way to protect you skin. Apply it liberally before
you go out and reapply it periodically.
2. Establish a Regular Skin Routine
There are a few basics to remember:
• Cleanse – Use a gentle cleanser to wash away dirt and grime that accumulates
during the day
• Moisturize – Find a moisturizer that’s right for your skin and use it to keep
your skin healthy and soft. Dry skin can cause irritations that may lead to
blemishes
• Exfoliate – A gentle exfoliator will remove dead skin cells that can clog pores.
Regular exfoliations will do wonders for your complexion
3. Watch Your Stress Levels
Stress has a tremendous effect on our skin. It can trigger breakouts and blemishes.
Reducing your stress will have a positive effect on your skin. Exercise regularly,
learn relaxation techniques and get adequate sleep to lower your stress levels. This
“Inside-out” approach to skin care can be very beneficial. Left unattended, stress is
a silent killer that can sneak up on us.
4. Avoid Smoking
Smoking increases wrinkles and ages your skin. It damages collage and elastin,
substances that provide elasticity in your skin. It also decreases blood flow and
oxygen to the skin. These are two factors crucial to healthy skin. Smoking exposes
your skin to free radicals, which contribute to the degeneration of the skin. If you’
re already smoking, do what you can to quit. Not only is it good for your skin, it’s
good for your whole body. If you need help, consult your medical professional.
